The Last Dance…

Hello and welcome to my April newsletter, thanks for being here! This month marks the end of an era in Albuquerque. The very last Gathering of Nations Powwow will take place on April 24-25, 2026, closing the final chapter of a tradition that has been woven into the fabric of our city for four decades. If you have attended in the past, you already know just how special the Gathering of Nations is. And if you haven’t experienced it yet, this is the year! Organizers are calling it “The Last Dance,” and it is sure to be a bittersweet farewell to an event that has long been a celebration of culture, artistry, tradition, and community unlike anything else in the world.

Each spring, for 43 years, thousands of Indigenous dancers, singers, artists, and families have gathered in Albuquerque, transforming Expo New Mexico into something truly extraordinary. The Gathering of Nations Powwow has become part of the rhythm of spring here, much like Balloon Fiesta is to autumn, and it’s hard to imagine Albuquerque without it.

If you’re unfamiliar with this event, the Gathering of Nations is considered the largest Powwow in North America, welcoming more than 70,000 attendees and representing tribes from across the U.S., Canada, and worldwide. What began in 1983 as a much smaller community gathering has grown into one of Albuquerque’s most meaningful, and internationally celebrated cultural happenings.

For more than four decades, thousands of Indigenous dancers, singers, artists, and families representing more than 700 tribes have come together here each spring to celebrate and share their traditions. This year’s Gathering promises to be especially memorable,and emotional, as Albuquerque says goodbye to this beloved event. The final Gathering of Nations will take place just a couple of weeks from now, April 24-25, at Tingley Coliseum and Expo New Mexico.

The Grand Entry of Dancers takes place twice each day on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, April 24, you can experience it at Noon and 7pm, and on Saturday, April 25, at Noon and 6pm. Watching thousands of dancers enter the arena together in full regalia is one of the most breathtaking, powerful and unforgettable sights you will ever see. There is truly nothing else like it. The Gathering of Nations is an Indigenous World Celebration that creates space for everyone. A chance to witness the beauty, strength, artistry, and spirit of Native cultures coming together in one place. This year’s Grand Entry is expected to feel even more meaningful, as it marks the final time this beloved gathering will bring its extraordinary energy to Albuquerque. Whether you have attended for years or have never gone before, this is the year to make sure it's on your agenda to experience it.

The Indian Traders Market features more than 300 vendor booths from across North America and is one of the highlights of the Gathering of Nations experience. Bringing together an extraordinary collection of Native American artists, jewelers, craftspeople, clothing designers, quilters, traders, and suppliers, it is a wonderful place to spend time exploring and discovering something truly special. You’ll find beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces, from handmade jewelry and art to textiles, clothing, and gifts, allowing you to bring home a little piece of this year’s festivities while supporting incredibly talented artisans. Health, wellness, and educational vendors will also be on hand, sharing the latest in holistic products, healing practices, and information.

Stage 49 is the live music heart of Gathering of Nations and the hub for much of the event’s diverse entertainment lineup. Throughout Friday and Saturday, it gives both established and emerging Indigenous artists a place to share their talents and connect with attendees. From rock, blues, country, and reggae to hip hop and beyond, Stage 49 showcases a variety of performances throughout the day and into the evening. A wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary music, featuring both up-and-coming performers and long-renowned talent. Whether you stop by for one set or spend hours listening, it is an inspiring way to experience the creativity and energy of Indigenous artists.

The Miss Indian World Pageant will come to a meaningful conclusion this year. The outgoing ceremony for the current, and final, Miss Indian World, Dania Wahwasuck, takes place on Saturday, April 25. First held in 1984, the Miss Indian World competition quickly became one of the most prestigious traditions of the Gathering of Nations. Each year, the title has been awarded to a young Indigenous woman who would go on to serve as a cultural goodwill ambassador, representing Native American and First Nations cultures throughout the world. For decades, Miss Indian World has been the largest pageant competition and one of the most respected cultural honors for Indigenous women.

The competition has never been simply about winning a crown. It has always been an opportunity for young women to proudly share their tribal traditions, language, and heritage through public speaking, interviews, essays, traditional talent, and dance. While this year marks the final chapter of the pageant, its legacy will live on through the remarkable women who have held the title over the years. The spirit of Miss Indian World, and all it has encouraged in young women to learn, preserve, and celebrate their culture, will continue far beyond this last Gathering of Nations.

The Horse & Rider Regalia Parade honors and celebrates the deep and enduring connection between the horse and the way of life of many North American Native tribes. Held Friday and Saturday at 4pm around the Powwow grounds, this special event features horses and riders adorned in traditional regalia representing many different Tribal Nations. Each rider’s clothing and adornment tells a story, honoring their tribe’s history, traditions, and artistry. From the intricate craftsmanship of the regalia to the graceful coordination between horse and rider, it is both moving and visually stunning to experience. Throughout this “Best in Show” style competition, announcers will share the cultural significance and meaning behind the regalia, offering a deeper understanding of the traditions being celebrated.

Organizers are inviting attendees to submit short videos or stories that may be featured during the Powwow, on the livestream, or in future media or press coverage. For more than four decades, Albuquerque has had the extraordinary honor of being home to the Gathering of Nations Powwow. What began as a community event grew into something far greater, a world-renowned celebration bringing together culture, artistry, tradition, and connection in a way that is truly unmatched. Each spring, the sights and sounds of the Gathering have become part of the heartbeat of our city: the drumbeats echoing through Expo New Mexico, the vibrant regalia, the artistry, the music, the food, and the sense of belonging and shared humanity filling the air. It has introduced generations of Albuquerque residents and visitors to the beauty and richness of Indigenous cultures, while also creating lasting memories and traditions of its own. It is hard to imagine spring in Albuquerque without it. In the years ahead, there will no doubt be a quiet space where Gathering of Nations once lived. A space that will remind us just how fortunate we were to have this remarkable event call Albuquerque home for so long.
